Two months ago, Panchi-kun, also known as Punch the Monkey, blew up all over the internet. The seven-month macaque monkey flooded social media with his cute, friendly face; however, his adorable features were not the main reason for his rise to fame. In reality, his 24/7 attachment to his orange orangutan plushie made everyone, and their mom, go crazy.

Born in July 2025, Punch did not have the easiest time as a young macaque. He actually faced abandonment from his mother and was only days away from dying. Thankfully, the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan rescued Punch and hand-reared him back to health. Sadly, Punch still felt the side effects of his mother’s departure, and that is when he first developed his attachment to his famous orangutan plushie.

However, the plushie was not the only reason people started paying attention. When Punch first entered the enclosure, the other macaque monkeys were not the most welcoming. Videos surfaced of Punch being bullied by other macaques; they shoved and pushed him over. It was even more emotional when photos of Punch looking defeated, cuddling his plushie, went around. This is when the hashtag HangInTherePunch flooded the internet, and even Ikea reposted it. Then, the comment sections of the Zoo’s posts were filled with words of reassurance for the young macaque, all in the hopes that he would eventually make a friend.

Luckily, only a few weeks later, new videos started to appear, and this time, Punch was making friends. They were playing and even grooming each other, which eased the minds of thousands online. Nonetheless, it is crucial to remember that it will take time for Punch to be fully accepted; that is how nature works. It is also okay if, now and then, the others do give him reminders of his place. Trust that the Zoo has control, and that Punch will be completely safe no matter what.

In the end, Punch’s story is one filled with a lot of emotions. From happy to sad, this little macaque has seen a lot in his short time. However, he and his plushie are a perfect reminder that the smallest things can bring us joy, and even the tiniest of animals can persevere through it all.
