What started as a normal morning for Logan Hayes turned into an unexpected call to action when a death-threatening situation presented itself. On the morning of February 6, 2026, Sheldy Apollon began driving to her prenatal massage. At the time, Apollon was 34 weeks pregnant and experiencing pre-eclampsia, or a fatal blood pressure disorder that occurs in only 5 to 8% of all pregnancies. On the way, due to the side effects of her disorder, Apollon started feeling incredibly dizzy. She stopped once to let the wave of discomfort pass, and after a few minutes, started driving again. However, the feeling did not budge, and as she attempted to pull over again, her car drifted into a pond on the side of the road.

For a second, Apollon was confused by the situation, with the pain still raging in her head. Although once she felt water at her feet, the nightmarish situation finally clicked. Thankfully for her, passerby Logan Hayes, who was actually from a nearby town, was in the area. He witnessed the scene, and instead of carrying on, rushed to the pond to assist Apollon. Even with the temperature around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, Hayes did not take a second thought.

When he reached the car, he could not open 3 of the 4 doors because they were underwater. In the first moments of their interaction, Apollon was still in shock by the whole situation, so Hayes had to instruct her to follow his lead. As she climbed through the gap between the two front seats, the car began to tip, and water filled faster than before. In a split second, Apollon and Hayes were outside the vehicle just as it sank below the pond. That is the first moment when Hayes realized, “Oh, my God – this lady is pregnant,” according to what he recalled to WPBF and WPTV.

First responders were there in minutes after the two swam 50 feet to shore. After triple-checking the car for anyone else, Apollon was taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries. Despite her safety, Apollon went under to give an emergency C-section to her baby girl later that day. Now, both she and her baby are safe in the confinement of their own home.

Hayes’s swift action saved more than just one life that day. Both Apollon and her husband shared deep gratitude for Hayes, as they did not know what might have occurred without him. Hayes was in shock, too, and he even called his mother straight after expressing the emotions he felt after his bravery. This situation was startling and unforeseen; however, it just shows how a selfless, life-risking decision can truly mean the world to others.
